Massachusetts’ population grew modestly for the year ending July 1, 2025, experiencing both a positive natural increase and positive net migration driven by immigration, according to an analysis by the UMass Donahue Institute of annual population estimates recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The state's population increased by 15,524 over the year, from 7,138,560 to 7,154,084. This 0.2% percentage increase represents a slowdown in population growth compared to the previous year’s estimate, when the Census Bureau estimated a 1.0% increase in Massachusetts’ population from 2023 to 2024 and the largest increase, numbers-wise, in 60 years.

The goal of the Population Estimates Program (PEP) at the UMass Donahue Institute is to ensure that population estimates and counts produced by the Census Bureau for Massachusetts geographies are as accurate as possible and inclusive of the most up-to-date information available in the commonwealth.
