Application Instructions
Please note: We are using a new application system for Summer 2026. If you encounter any technical issues, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help troubleshoot.
- Programs starting June 28: May 1st, 2026
- Programs starting July 12: May 15th, 2026
- Programs starting July 26: May 31st, 2026
To apply for Summer Pre-College Programs, we require:
- A written statement of interest: a brief, one-page statement describing why you want to attend Summer Pre-College at UMass Amherst and specifically the program(s) you have chosen.
- An unofficial high school transcript (PDF), including fall grades from the current school year. Rising sophomores should include a middle school transcript as well.
- A letter of recommendation written by a teacher or guidance counselor who can speak to your skills, abilities, maturity level and academic accomplishments that make you a suitable candidate for the program you are applying to. Letters of recommendation will be submitted through the application system by your recommender.
- A non-refundable $45 application fee
UMass Amherst Pre-College Programs does not permit the use of generative AI tools for creating application materials such as statements of interest.
International students will be asked to provide the following:
- Additional information regarding English language proficiency. We accept TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores. Students currently attending an English language or bilingual high school are exempt from test scores.
- An emergency contact based in the United States. This can be a relative, family friend, college consultant, etc.

To apply for Research Intensives, we require:
- A written statement of interest: a brief, one-page statement describing why you want to attend the pre-college Research Intensives program at UMass Amherst, and specifically the labs you have chosen. You will be asked to select your top 3 lab choices in the application.
- An unofficial high school transcript (PDF), along with fall grades from the current school year. Rising sophomores should include a middle school transcript as well.
- A letter of recommendation written by a teacher or guidance counselor who can speak to your skills, abilities, maturity level and academic accomplishments that make you a suitable candidate for the program you are applying to. Letters of recommendation will be submitted through the application system by your recommender.

The college prep workshops are open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school. High school seniors who will graduate in Spring 2026 are also welcome.
Online Workshops
No application is required for the online college prep workshops. Registrations will be taken on a first come first served basis, and will remain open until workshops have filled.
- From the workshops webpage, click the Register Now button to fill out and submit a registration form.
- You will receive a follow-up email within 24-48 hours containing instructions to complete your registration.
- Follow instructions to activate your Spire account, if you don't already have one.
- Follow instructions to pay your workshop fees.
In Person Workshops
