Lucinda Canty

Dr. Lucinda Canty has been awarded the National Black Nurses Association's (NBNA) 2024 Trailblazer Award and is also being inducted into their inaugural Distinguished Fellows of the Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing (FADLN) as a Luminary ADLN Fellow. The awards will be presented during the NBNA Presidential Gala on Saturday, July 27, 2024 during the 52nd Annual Institute and Conference of the National Black Nurses Association, Inc. in San Francisco, CA. Along with presenting at the conference in a four-hour Black Maternal Health Institute, Dr. Canty is also bringing six current Nursing students, consisting of four ALANA e-board members and two Seedworks Scholars.

The NBNA Trailblazer Award is presented to an individual whose character places them in a position of leadership. It is designed for an individual who has taken risks. This award is presented to an individual who leads their community, state, and the nation in nursing, business, philanthropy, communications, government, education, or the arts. Dr. Canty is one of four recipients this year.

The NBNA Luminary ADLN Fellowship is comprised of highly distinguished individuals who are renowned for their JEDI contributions in education, research, practice, policy, or administration. Each Luminary ADLN Fellow has at least thirty years of experience in nursing and continues to open doors for greater JEDI in nursing while they continue their innovative groundbreaking work. Dr. Canty has been in nursing for 33 years and will be part of this inaugural class of Fellows.

Founded in 1971, the mission of NBNA is “to serve as the voice for Black nurses and diverse populations ensuring equal access to professional development, promoting educational opportunities and improving health.” The NBNA represents approximately 308,000 Black nurses from the USA, Canada, Eastern Caribbean and Africa, with 111
