Lisa Wolf Co-Authors Chapter in New Volume 'Language and Health in Action'

Elaine Marieb College of Nursing associate professor Lisa Wolf, PhD, RN, CEN, FAEN, FAAN, is a coauthor of a new chapter titled “Everyone Is Mom: Speaking Maternalism in the Emergency Department,” published in the edited volume Language and Health in Action.

The book brings together original scholarship at the intersection of linguistic and medical anthropology and is designed for undergraduate teaching in anthropology, the health professions, and related fields. Developed with input from undergraduates at UMass Amherst and Colgate University, the volume has already been taught at both institutions and received enthusiastic reviews from students. Feedback from those classes directly informed revisions to Wolf’s chapter.

Language and Health in Action is organized around a foundational “Key Concepts” chapter and five thematic sections: clinical interaction, language access, community and communicability, health and environment, and healing practices. Chapters are written in accessible prose, define key terms, and include immersive examples from qualitative and ethnographic research. Each chapter concludes with reflection and discussion questions, and a companion website provides complementary multimedia resources. The editors and contributors also discuss the book in a recent podcast episode and a short blog post.

Faculty who would like the nursing library to acquire the book can submit a request through Oxford University Press’s acquisition form. In addition to a print copy that will be available soon, the UMass Libraries have acquired an unlimited-user license to the ebook version. This type of license means that there are no limits to how many members of the UMass Amherst campus community can access the book at any given time, allowing instructors to utilize the book in their classes without requiring the students to purchase a copy. Wolf encourages instructors to consider adopting Language and Health in Action for courses that introduce students to how language and health practices shape one another, including courses for traditional undergraduates as well as accelerated B.S. in Nursing students.
