Lucinda Canty, PhD, CNM, FACNM, Associate Professor and Director of the Seedworks Health Equity Program at the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing, has received a $241,137 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support anti-racism initiatives in nursing.
The one-year grant begins on November 15, 2022. Dr. Canty is the Principal Investigator (PI) and will be working with co-PIs Raeann LeBlanc and Gabrielle Abelard of EMCON and Gayle Robinson of Seattle University.
Other members of the team are:
- The Overdue Reckoning on Racism in Nursing team: Peggy Chinn, Christina Nyirati and Dr. Canty
- The RNs Reckoning with Racism team: Frankie Manning, Sharon Mosley, Gayle Robinson, Raeann LeBlanc and Dr. Canty.
Dr. Canty says, "This grant will support the work that I have been a part of with Overdue Reckoning on Racism in Nursing and the RNs Reckoning with Racism documentary project to develop anti-racism solutions. We are going to build on what has been done to develop actionable ways to educate nursing students and nurses on ways to dismantle racism.... We are going to uplift the experiences of nursing students of color and let them help guide us in identifying solutions."
Among the initiatives the grant will fund are:
- educational events for UMass Amherst students, including a conference in Spring 2023
- development of an anti-racism curriculum and a discussion guide to accompany the documentary
- several web discussions that focus on solutions: examine things that have been done and what nursing needs to do
- further development of resources that help people to understand racism and learn actions that we can all take
