The impact and strength of the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing's partnership with Baystate Medical Center (BMC) is clearly demonstrated in the 2023 BMC Nursing Report, which features the work and experiences of EMCON members several times. This year's report, titled "Planting the Seeds of Nursing Excellence & Innovation," celebrates the significance of collective dedication to excellence and innovation in nursing care.
Joanne Miller, Chief Nurse Executive of Baystate Health and Chief Nursing Officer at Baystate Medical Center, writes in the introductory remarks that the report is a "testament to our nurses’ unwavering commitment to nurturing growth, fostering creativity, and cultivating a culture of continuous improvement in nursing practice."
Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing & Engineering Innovation
The 2023 report highlights collaborative achievements with the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation, including co-directors Frank Sup and Karen Giuliano’s talk on nurse-led healthcare innovation, the Nursing Research Program, and Dr. Giuliano's Fulbright Fellowship at the Edinburgh Napier University (ENU) School of Health and Social Care in Scotland earlier this year (pp. 28, 29, 35, and 46 - 49). The Center writes that this groundbreaking relationship's research focuses include "an examination of the flow rate accuracy of IV Smart Pumps, working with students to design a more stable chest tube holder, the use of robotics to assist nurses, and the development of novel polymers for use in warm air therapy devices."
John "JJ" Wilson '23
John “JJ” Wilson '23 is recognized in the report (pp. 7) as one of the few nurses who was hired as a nurse resident on the unit where they completed their preceptorship experience. Upon his graduation last year, Wilson accepted a position as a nurse resident at Baystate Children's Hospital in the Pediatric Emergency Department (ED). Clinical Assistant Professor Kristy Pereira was one of Wilson's mentors during his preceptorship and also works in that unit as a pediatric nurse.
Wilson says of his experience in the report,
“My preceptorship really helped bridge the gap between nursing school and being a nurse. It was an opportunity for me to gain confidence in my nursing skills. The progression of my preceptorship offered me the ability to grow."
-JJ Wilson '23
"An exceptionally hard worker and selfless leader," Wilson was one of ten undergraduates honored with a 21st Century Leaders Award at Commencement 2023. As an undergraduate nursing student, Wilson notably spearheaded a recruitment program for the Gift of Life public bone marrow and blood stem cell registry, resulting in the largest collegiate drive ever, with over 3,100 swabs.
