Throughout the academic year, the Office of Research and Scholarship (ORS) hosts a series of speakers from campus and beyond to highlight exciting scholarship for the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing (EMCON) community. In this installment, ORS is pleased to feature EMCON Associate Professor Joohyun Chung, PhD, MStat, RN, who will present her ongoing research in a talk titled “Who Stays Open? A National Analysis of Nursing Home Closures Over Three Decades.”

This presentation explores the nationwide landscape of nursing home closures from 1990 to 2024, focusing on how facility characteristics—such as bed capacity, payer participation, and specialized services—impact closure risk. Using national CMS data, the study compares facilities that remained open to those that closed, highlighting key differences and regional trends. Findings underscore the vulnerability of smaller, resource-limited nursing homes and the potential influence of Medicare and Medicaid policy shifts on long-term care access.
