Courses on this list have been pre-approved as prerequisite courses for candidates seeking admission the Accelerated BS in Nursing Track. Courses not on this list must be approved as prerequisites by the program director. Requirement: Anatomy & Physiology I and II - 4 credits w/lab for each

Prerequisite must be completed within 10 years prior to the application deadline.

UMass Amherst courses:

• KIN 270 (4 cr) Anatomy & Physiology I w/Lab: Study of the structure and function of cell, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems in the human body. Integration and regulations of system function from an applied perspective through clinical applications.
• KIN 272 (4 cr) Anatomy & Physiology II w/Lab: Study of structure and function of the following systems: endocrine, digestive, urinary, respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Integration and regulation of system function from an applied perspective through clinical applications.

Pre-approved Equivalents:

Requirement: Microbiology – 3 credits (no lab needed)

Prerequisite must be completed within 5 years prior to the application deadline.

UMass Amherst course:

• Microbiology 255 (4 cr): With lab. Basic concepts of microbiology with emphasis on microbial pathogenesis and immunity. Medically important microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, rickettsia, protozoa, and the diseases which they produce. Laboratory exercises develop fundamental skills in aseptic technique, microscopy, pure culture study, and the isolation and identification of pathogenic microorganisms. (Gen.Ed. BS)

Requirement: Human Growth and Development through the Lifespan – 3 credits

Prerequisite must be completed within 10 years prior to the application deadline.

UMass Amherst course:

• Nursing 210 – Life Span Growth & Development: The study of human growth and development from a lifespan perspective, emphasizing the evolution of the whole individual. Gross and fine motor development, cognitive growth, language development, and social growth at each age level. The interaction of such variables as culture, ethnicity, class, and gender. Major trends and issues with a focus on individual, institutional, contextual, and cultural influences and effects. Open to non-majors.

Requirement: Nutrition – 3 or 4 credits

Prerequisite must be completed within 5 years prior to the application deadline.

UMass Amherst courses:

• Nutrition 130: Introduction to the science of human nutrition and the relationship of food and nutrients to health and disease. Topics covered include digestion, and functions of macro and micronutrients as well as current recommendations for nutrient intake. We will also discuss energy balance and weight control. 4 credits. (Gen.Ed. BS)
• Nutrition 230: Basic Nutrition Basic principles of human nutrition. Energy needs. Chemical structures, physical characteristics, and metabolism of protein, carbohydrate, lipids, minerals, and vitamins. Human requirements at various ages. Food sources. Effects of deficiency or excess on health. Prerequisites: general biology and chemistry; organic chemistry concurrent.

Pre-approved Prerequisites:

Requirement: Statistics – 3 credits 

Prerequisite must be completed within 10 years prior to the application deadline. Descriptive statistics, elements of probability theory, and basic ideas of statistical inference. Topics include frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and dispersion, commonly occurring distributions (binomial, normal, etc.), estimation, and testing of hypotheses.
