Eligibility: Students with financial need, a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have demonstrated a break in enrollment from their education for personal or financial reasons.
Description: This award has been made possible by a gift from Dr. Marieb, who wanted to create a scholarship to assist deserving students who have, because of family or financial circumstances, had to interrupt their education. This reflects to donor's own personal history. She had to leave school for a number of years and was only able to return to her education as the result of a scholarship. Dr. Marieb graduated with a degree, took several graduate degrees including a PhD in Zoology, an RN degree and a Masters degree in nursing. She us currently a leading biology textbook author with over two dozen books to her credit. She writes the premiere anatomy and physiology textbook which is used on the UMass Amherst campus, as well across the country and internationally.
Scholarship Legacy Information: Dr. Elaine Marieb earned her PhD in zoology from UMass Amherst in 1969 and returned to school earning an MS in 1985. Marieb taught anatomy and physiology at Holyoke Community College for 25 years and while teaching, she enrolled in HCC’s Registered Nursing program, earning her associate degree. Her teaching and education led her to write a series of anatomy and physiology textbooks that have gone on to become international bestsellers. She is a very generous philanthropist who has made significant gifts to a number of institutions.
