The field of biotechnology continues to be fueled by rapid advances in molecular and cell biology. This program emphasizes translating observations in the laboratory and community into real-world applications that improve public health.

The MS in molecular and cellular biology (MCB) at UMass Amherst is a fifth-year graduate program open only to Five College students from Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, or the University of Massachusetts.

You are required to have a home laboratory prior to admission, and your advisor must be a member of the MCB program.

Most MS students continue research started in their final undergraduate year. You’ll also take advanced courses in molecular biology and cellular biology or biochemistry.

The program prepares students for careers in research and development with top pharmaceutical and biotech companies and is an excellent foundation for advanced studies, such as the PhD program in molecular and cellular biology.
