The BS in geology at UMass Amherst will help you develop a deeper understanding of Earth’s structure and internal dynamics to answer unresolved questions about our planet and the geologic socioeconomic challenges we face. This is an ideal major for you if you’re interested in building a strong scientific foundation leading to a professional career in geological sciences.

You’ll study processes that transform landscapes, coastlines and natural water systems, and the climate system. You’ll take courses in geosciences as well as supporting science and math courses so you’ll have a solid foundation in the science of geology and its application to real-world problems. You can also tailor your program to your interests through electives in areas such as computer mapping, natural hazards, glacial geology, and paleoclimatology, among others.

You might also consider a BS in earth systems if you’re interested in a more holistic perspective of the planet’s large-scale systems, such as the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and more. Whatever you choose, you’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers or advanced graduate programs in these areas.
