SBS Guidelines for Faculty Searches:
Achieving Diversity in Recruitment, Hiring & Retention
SBS Diversity Vision
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is one of the most diverse colleges at UMass Amherst in regards to tenure-track faculty. In the last few years, concerted and productive efforts have yielded more faculty representation across the Equal Opportunity & Diversity categories. However, despite past success, the college can still do much better. If we disaggregate the numbers within individual departments, we actually see that some departments/programs are much more diverse (particularly with regards to gender/ethnicity/race) than others. The complexity of “the academic pipeline” is indeed real and certainly affects the make-up of departments. Additionally, we’re all well aware that “exceptions may need to exist for highly specialized positions that typically attract fewer numbers of applicants, [but] the fact remains that when a hiring pool contains no women or minorities, the outcome is already predetermined when it comes to any diversity goal.” In light of our goals to be more consistent in our efforts to hire new faculty from a broadly diverse and highly qualified pool, we have created a set of guidelines aimed to help achieve our vision, especially in fostering a college culture and climate that is clearly committed to inclusive excellence, equity and diversity.
