Caps and Gowns- Caps, gowns, and tassels may be picked up the week before commencement. Garment pickup will be located in the Campus Center, Room 165-69, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting Monday, May 6th until Thursday, May 9th.  Pickup on Friday, May 10th will be in the same location, with limited hours of operation from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m..   On Commencement Day, May 10, caps and gowns may be obtained after 3:00 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Students who are not on campus may request to have their cap and gown shipped by visiting www.oakhalli.com.

Now that your Capstone experience is drawing to an end, make sure to fill out this survey to help individual instructors develop the program. Results will be kept confidential and will be analyzed only after being grouped with those of other students. Once results are grouped by course, the anonymous results will be sent to IE instructors so they can use the information in their ongoing development of their IE courses.

Interested in taking Sex, Gender and Health: Understanding the Social Body (WOMENSST 395SB) over the summer?

Continuing and Professional Education is offering this new course this summer in Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies. WOMENSST395SB explores a variety of theoretical and critical traditions from the social sciences in health contexts. This class is designed for students interested social science approaches to biomedical and allied health topics. Through readings, lectures, discussions, films and writing we will broaden our understandings of the body (the material body) and the social life of that body (identity and subjectivity).  We will discuss potential answers to questions about the relationship between health and medicine and the construction of health, wellness, illness and disease. Interested in taking PUBHLTH 397C Health Careers this summer?
This course encourages students in the SPHHS to explore their personal health career development and discuss the role that their self-concept plays in career decision making. Self-assessment inventories will be utilized to examine how one’s major relates to finding career satisfaction. Contemporary internship/job search skills and strategies will be identified and implemented. Knowledge will be gained in designing a professional resume, gaining interviewing techniques, process of obtaining references and negotiating salary. A discussion of professionalism, navigating a multi-generational workforce, the role of social media and networking will be covered. Alternative options will be reviewed such as graduate school, Peace Corps, gap year, professional schools etc.

National Service Agency Announces AmeriCorps Funding Opportunities for Indian Tribes (Deadline: May 30)

The Corporation for National and Community Service  (CNCS) today announced that Indian Tribes now have the opportunity to  apply for funding that would position them to identify ways that  AmeriCorps members could help them tackle the unique challenges facing  Native American communities.

The AmeriCorps planning grants provide up to $75,000 for a one-year  period to provide support to an Indian Tribe for the development of an  AmeriCorps program that will engage AmeriCorps members in order to  address pressing community problems. Planning grant recipients are  expected to be better prepared to compete for an AmeriCorps program  grant in the following grant cycle.

Exhibit Intern at the Public Health Museum
Internship Application Deadline: 5/9/13
Description of intern duties:
The Public Health Museum in Massachusetts is a non-profit educational and cultural museum dedicated to preserving records and artifacts of our nation's history in public health. Our mission is to offer an educational center where exhibits and collections portray history and historical documents provide resources for education, and support programs that address public health issues, past and present.

The museum is seeking three summer 2013 interns to support a grant-funded project to update and reinterpret our current Tuberculosis exhibit area. Interest and experience in museum work and/or public health is helpful, however those from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Interns at the Public Health Museum are expected to be self-driven and able to take initiative and work independently, as well as with their team. Working for a small institution means that the internship project will have immediate benefits to the institution and the intern will gain a variety of experiences and training. All training, oversight, and complete support will be provided by museum staff and board of directors.

This is a partial paid, partial volunteer internship.  Interns will be awarded a $360 stipend and expected to complete 200 to 250 hours over the course of the summer.

Healthy & Active Design Program Intern

Organization: SPIFFY (Strategic Planning Initiative for Families and Youth) Health Design is one of several strategies being implemented as part of a multi-town collaboration known as Healthy Hampshire. The mission of Healthy Hampshire is to improve the health of all residents of Hampshire County by working with municipal and community leaders to effect changes to community policies and systems that will promote access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.

Internship: The intern will work with town leaders in Belchertown to assess how many residents use the public parks and natural areas, what barriers exist to utilization, and what strategies might be put in place to encourage increased usage. The intern will design surveys, administer them to residents, analyze the data and work with SPIFFY and Belchertown officials to make an action plan on how to improve access to recreational areas, all with mentorship from SPIFFY staff and the Belchertown Conservation Commission. The unpaid internship time-line and number of hours is flexible; however, we would need a commitment of at least 12 hours per week for 10 weeks. Having a car would be helpful but not absolutely necessary.

Pediatric Physical Activity Lab Internship

Internship: Seeking 3 motivated and responsible students, who are seeking to gain more research experience in a community-based research lab. Students must be comfortable working on a team and interacting with community members. Students with a car are preferred due to the fact that our research is based out of Springfield, MA. The majority of data collection will take place on the weekend; however, the student will only be expected to partake in data collection every other weekend (depending on scheduling conflicts). Students must also be available for two weekdays to go to Springfield for recruitment and study implementation. Student must commit to working in the lab of the entire 2013 – 2014 academic school year.

Duties:

  1. Participate in an orientation and training for all PPAL members;
  2. Complete on-line CITI Training;
  3. Attend PPAL weekly lab meetings;
  4. Assist in research participant recruitment, data collection, and data entry
  5. Complete a PowerPoint Presentation on an article
  6. Complete a Literature Review paper (either one per semester or one year-long research paper)
  7. Complete an end of semester evaluation

Qualifications:

A student MUST have at least 3.2 GPA (student must submit a transcript, unofficial copy is acceptable)

Two references related to any work experiences.

Available from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm on at least 1 weekday per week for BOTH Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semester.        

Must also be available on alternating Saturday and/or Sunday.        

Excellent organizational, verbal, and interpersonal skills

Able to work independently

All qualified students MUST undergo an interview process

SPHHS is looking for a summer student worker (with the possibility of continuing to work in the Fall)

We’re interesting in someone to help with general office work: filing, sorting, some data entry.  The pay-rate is $8.75/hr.  Over the summer we’re looking for anywhere between 10-20 hr/wk.  In the Fall, we’d need 10hr/wk.  We can hire for the summer even if the student is unavailable in the Fall. 2013 National Transgender Health Summit

The Center of Excellence for Transgender Health and the World Professional Association of Transgender Health invite health care providers, health and human service professionals, mental health professionals, health administrators, researchers, students and advocates to attend the 2013 National Transgender Health Summit. Programming includes plenary sessions by world-renowned experts in the field of transgender health care, training tracks for medical and mental health care providers interested in building their skills for working with transgender patients and clients, a research track for the dissemination of cutting edge developments in the field of transgender health, and a transgender health policy institute.

An example of a true public health intervention, the Fitspiration program has demonstrated improving the physical and mental health of children. Participants reported improved physical outcomes, such as increased ability to do jumping jacks, pushups and running laps; and mental health outcomes, including feeling more confident and knowledgeable about health. These outcomes impact children often not able to play outside due to safety concerns and no longer have recess at school. HCF’s premier youth wellness program is called Fitspiration (Healthy Inspiration meets Perspiration!), a fitness and health education program for boys and girls ages 5-12. Increasing Physical Activity Amongst Preschoolers in Child Care Centers- MPH Project Presented By Najla Waleed.

Currently, many preschool children attending childcare centers are not getting enough daily physical activity. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health states that preschool children need at least 60 minutes of structured physical activity a day (Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 2013).  Thus, this project focuses on a structured 60-minute physical activity lesson plan created for the preschool children attending the Square One Children’s Center in Holyoke, Massachusetts. To create this lesson, input from community members, such as the preschool teachers, had to be incorporated with the literature regarding the most appropriate theories and exercises to use when designing the lesson. The overall aim of the project was to provide the preschool children with a daily, fun, and structured 60-minute physical activity workout.

Examination of Autism as a Risk Factor for Asthma in Children in the US- MPH Project Presented By Stanley Kotey

Asthma prevalence in children younger than 18 years is 9.4% and admissions to emergency rooms nationwide have been increasing over the past 30 yrs. A theoretical association between autism and asthma has been discussed in literature. However, no large population–based epidemiological study has examined the association. We therefore used the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH 2007) to study the association with a cross-sectional study methodology and presented our results. We believe our findings could inform preventive screening measures in this sub-population.
