Harvard School of Public Health Assistant Professor of Epidemiology Janet Rich-Edwards, ScD, MS, will be giving talk titled "Sticks and Stones may Break my Heart: How early physical and sexual abuse shape lifelong cardiovascular risk"

    Abstract:

Violence against girls is prevalent in the United States, with over a third of women reporting some degree of physical or sexual abuse before age 18.  We will review the epidemiologic evidence that the frequency and severity of child abuse has a dose-response association with risk of chronic disease in adulthood.  We will discuss issues the behavioral and physiologic pathways through which abuse may lead to increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease among women.
