Justin FermannDescription
A high-level treatment of concepts covered in Chem111/112 or Chem121/122 sequence, presuming mastery of General Chemistry principles and skills at the AP Chemistry level or equivalent. Lecture component will focus on experimental evidence and theoretical basis for atomic and molecular structure, reaction dynamics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium. Learning objectives emphasize HOW we know over WHAT we know. Students are expected to bring operational familiarity with most general chemistry topics (e.g. drawing and interpreting Lewis structures, parametrizing rate expressions, computing thermodynamic quantities such as free energy), but review will be provided through on-line tutorials for prerequisite knowledge and skills. Laboratory skill development through required two sequential 1-credit GenChem Laboratory courses: Chem 123LF in Fall and Chem 123LS in Spring.
Eligibility
Notes
AP Chemistry score 4 or 5, or equivalent. Grade of 23 or greater on Part A and 5 or greater on Part B of the Math Placement Exam. Reserve 15 seats for Chemistry majors. Co-requisite Math 131.
