Mission

The UMass Amherst Writing Center believes that everyone is a writer. We value the differences in writing and language that writers bring with them from different regions, nations, and areas, and the dialects and languages used in these spaces. We seek to create a culture of writing across campus where all faculty, students, and staff respect past writing knowledge and extend it to new situations. We take a critically informed approach to writing and tutoring by:

  • helping writers meet their communicative purposes as they define them;
  • supporting writers as they discover and define the voices they might choose to deploy in writing;
  • supporting writers as they employ their knowledge learned in other literacy contexts, including at home, at school, and at work;
  • facilitating collaborative inquiry in supportive and reflective environments to help develop multiple approaches to any writing task by providing an interested, thoughtful, and open-minded response to writing and other communicative modes;
  • exploring and (re)considering what academic writing is and exploring the options available to writers of academic texts; and
  • educating and training ourselves through a practice-based and research-based approach to writing and tutoring.
