Embellishing any open surface with color, pattern, textile and trimmings is an inherent trait of India. It also speaks to the pride of ownership, whether it is a truck, auto rikshaw, camel or an elephant, they get decorated in festive fashion.
It is this festive quality that I was drawn to, when I created both pieces. An elephant’s elegant and rhythmic shape lends itself well to the sinewy lines of surface decoration. I found the process of making this sculpture just as rewarding as the surface design. For the jacket, I experiment with various stitches for textures and use the ombré color palette to create movement. The deep, rich tone of the garment serves as a good base for these explorations.
