Never Volunteer
One of the pieces of advice Dad gave me before I enlisted was, “Never volunteer for anything.” Well here I go again. I never seemed to be able to resist volunteering, especially when it involved a trip, more or less on my own, to anywhere. And I’d done it again.

AWOL Bag
I waved one more time out of the train window before my family disappeared from sight around a bend in the track. It would be the last time I saw them for almost two years. I pulled my head back inside the car and slid the window closed. I sat down and pulled my AWOL bag from under the seat and pulled a James Bond paperback from it. I put it back under the seat and settled back with my feet up on the seat across from me next to my duffel bag. I’d taken this trip before, over a year ago on my way to basic training. Not much to do. Two or more hours to New Haven where I would change trains. Might as well read.

Rhubarb
“It’s rhubarb,” Mom said. “Try a bite. It's good for you.” I wasn’t sure about this, but Mom wouldn’t tell me something was good when it wasn’t. I took a bite.
“Arggh.” I spit it out. It was horrible. How could it be good when it tasted so bad? Mom cutting the stalks into small pieces, and putting them into a pie plate with crust on the bottom.

Geese
The sound poured through the partly open window and nudged me from sleep.
“They’re back,” I thought. I was immediately awake. I jumped from bed, threw on some clothes and raced down the stairs, the dog behind me.
