Culinary Career Ladder Program
The Culinary Career Ladder Program is a workforce education program that assists employees in learning English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) in the first stages of their culinary career in Massachusetts. Our program is partnered with four higher education institutions: the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Smith College, Westfield Public College, and Lawrence Public Schools to participate in a regional effort to enhance new employees’ work experience and attract and retain culinary workers.
Our goal is to provide a positive initial experience that leads to a successful career in food services.
Services We Provide
- RECRUITMENT:
We help to increase the recruitment of low-proficiency English adults by:
o Supporting application process and reduce its potential barriers for ESOL applicants
o Improving culinary basics understanding among job applicants
o Supporting employees in their online application requirements (technical and translation support) - RETENTION:
We help increase retention increasing employment retention of new hires by:
• Supporting employees’ access to additional education opportunities available to them
• Improving the communication between employers and new hires at the workplace
• Increasing the understanding of culinary basics among new hires
• Improving foundational, computer-based organizational communication (manager/employee) among new hires

Making the connection to the workplace in our teaching content
Participatory teaching, 360-degree stakeholder input, the partnership model
Tailoring all practices to the specific needs of low- proficiency English adults
Linking contextualized training/education to advancement opportunities
Connecting project participants who complete project-funded foundational offerings to more advanced, locally-based learning opportunities
