Engagement & Initiatives
The Department of Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies (WGSS) values fostering intellectual community among faculty, students, and the wider community.
Giving
There are several ways that you can support our work in WGSS. On our Scholarships & Awards page, you will find links to donate to scholarships that support our undergraduate and graduate students directly as they pursue their education. You can also donate to the department's general fund, which allows us to produce our newsletter, host guest lectures and symposia, and support student programming, among many other things.
Internships
Internships are a wonderful way of bridging feminist theory and practice. Not only do internships give students valuable job skills, they help students test out possible careers prior to graduation. We have one of the highest internship participation rates in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
In order to get academic credit for an internship, you must register for credits and have a faculty sponsor and an academic contract. Internships can range from 1–12 credits. See your faculty sponsor or the undergraduate advisor for assistance.
Our students have worked in placements on campus, in the community, and in other cities. Some favorite internship sites include:
- The Center for Women and Community
- Safe Passage
- Tapestry Health
- The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office
- The UMass Civic Engagement and Service-Learning Office
- The Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program
- The Arts Extension Service
