WMWP Develops Disciplinary Literacy Pathway to Leadership

Throughout 2016 and 2017, WMWP has been involved in a national capacity-building effort called Building New Pathways to Leadership. The goal of this initiative is to develop leadership opportunities fpr teachers who may not be able to participate in the traditional Summer Leadership Institute. After making a "pitch" for  funding at the National Writing Project Annual Meeting last November, WMWP  received a  Gates Foundation-funded grant to develop an alternative pathway called Disciplinary Literacy Leadership, which will focus on the needs of content-area teachers. A central focus of the grant was to develop a civic engagement leadership institute to be offered in 2017. The institute began in the spring, included four full days in July, and will continue in the fall.

The design of the civic engagement institute was inspired by a similar one offered to science teachers during the past school year. In this video, teachers Lisa Rice and Brittany Rice discuss their experience in the Science Literacy Leadership Institute.
