Spring Course: Reading and Teaching Literary Nonfiction and Informational Text

Location: Baird Middle School, 1 Rooney Rd, Ludlow, MA (close to Mass Pike)

reading nonfictionCourse Description: Among the key instructional demands of current literacy standards is an emphasis on critical reading of literary nonfiction and informational texts to build disciplinary knowledge and academic vocabulary and to serve as the basis for analytical writing. This expectation presents challenges for teachers in all subjects. In this course, participants will discover the promises and challenges of studying nonfiction first-hand, by reading and discussing classic and contemporary examples of literary nonfiction and informational text, including at least one book-length piece, and writing in a variety of modes. Texts and strategies will include a range of grade levels and content areas. Participants will design units for their own classrooms.

Cost: $375 (plus Reading Nonfiction and one other book TBD). Fee includes registration for the WMWP Spring Symposium at Westfield State University

Credit: 67.5 PDPs (3 graduate credits optional @ $347).
