Summer Leadership Institute 2022

What does writing look like in your discipline?

How does your students’ writing contribute to their cross-curricular learning and to unpacking the complexities of our world?

How can writing help you examine and define your personal and pedagogical philosophies?

How can you use writing as an advocacy tool within the communities you care about?

The Western Massachusetts Writing Project (WMWP), a local site of the National Writing Project, is excited to once again offer a hybrid version of our Summer Leadership Institute in which we will address these questions and more. Through daily writing, peer group collaboration, and individualized research, our Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) welcomes K-16 educators of all disciplines and roles to explore the impact that race, language, poverty, and privilege have on equity in teaching and learning.

Danielle presenting a workshop 2016 Spring SymposiumWe deeply believe that by fostering a culture of writing for learning and self-expression, educators and their students will affect positive change in their communities on behalf of the most pressing social-justice needs of our time. Together we will hold space for developing renewed strength and vitality in our practice through collectively reimagining what empowered education can look like for both students and teachers. Successful completion of SLI provides opportunities for ongoing collaboration and a variety of leadership roles both within WMWP and beyond, including opportunities to earn income for facilitating professional development.

Testimonials

“This program made me feel more confident as a teacher, writer, and presenter.”

“This was the best PD ever. I think it really elevates the profession… teaching is not a 9-5; it is a vocation. Some educators might lose sight of that when they are bogged down with the politics of their schools. This institute was just a great opportunity to talk with other educators and reflect on our profession. This is vital to our practice.”

“I have concrete strategies to try in the classroom. It was amazing to have a chance to really reflect on my work outside of the school year. I am so glad I did the SLI!”

“I would tell others that no matter what their subject area is, they would benefit … SLI is helpful for all teachers."
