USGS 104(g) Funding Opportunity
The Massachusetts Water Resources Research Center (MA WRRC) provides information and updates on the USGS Water Resources Research Act (WRRA) Section 104(g) National Competitive Grants Program.
The 104(g) program supports research on significant national and regional water resources issues and promotes collaboration between USGS and university scientists. The program also supports the dissemination of research results and the training of scientists in water resources.
For FY2026, the 104(g) General funding opportunity is now available, and the 104(g) PFAS funding opportunity is expected to be released soon. There will not be an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) funding opportunity this year.

The 104(g) General program supports research addressing water resources problems and issues of a regional or interstate nature, including research related to specific program priorities identified by the Secretary of the Interior. The program promotes collaboration between USGS and university scientists on significant national and regional water resources issues, the dissemination and application of research results, and the training of scientists in water resources.
Proposal Submission Through MA WRRC
All proposals from Massachusetts investigators must be coordinated and submitted through the Massachusetts Water Resources Research Center (MA WRRC).
Please submit your complete proposal materials to @email no later than November 1, 2026, by the end of the day.
This internal deadline provides MA WRRC with sufficient time to review, coordinate, and prepare proposals for submission to USGS by the federal deadline.
Please include funds in your proposal budget to cover additional WRRC staff time associated with project coordination if the proposal is funded. For additional information regarding WRRC coordination and budgeting, please contact Timothy Randhir at @email.
USGS Collaboration
Collaboration with USGS scientists is highly encouraged. Applicants planning to collaborate with federal employees should carefully review the “Collaboration by Federal Employees” section of the FY2026 funding announcement.
Federal employees may collaborate with university investigators and may serve as Co-PIs, but may not serve as the project PI. Federal employees and agencies may not receive funds from the WRRA award or serve as a source of matching funds.
USGS scientists may receive up to $40,000 per proposal from separate internal USGS appropriations. For proposals involving a USGS collaborator, the required Statement of Government Involvement must include a workplan, separate budget, and explanation of personnel. This funding must be kept separate from the proposal's WRRA project budget.
Proposals involving a federal collaborator must also include a letter of support signed by leadership at the designated USGS center; the collaborator cannot sign the letter.

The FY2026 104(g) PFAS Notice of Funding Opportunity is currently in the final stage of USGS approval and has not yet been posted.
MA WRRC will update this page as soon as the PFAS funding opportunity becomes available, including the Grants.gov announcement, deadlines, funding information, and proposal submission requirements.
Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS)
There will not be a 104(g) Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) funding opportunity for FY2026.
