In 2019 UMass Amherst shipped approximately 1,600 tons per year (3 million lbs) of food waste and other compostable material for on-farm composting. Martin's Farm of Greenfield Massachusetts combines UMass food waste with animal bedding, leaves and restaurant food waste in an open windrow composting system to produce compost (a soil amendment) in about 3 months’ time.
The University has decided to prioritize the compost produced by UMass's Grounds Department for use on campus by the Landscape Services crews. We have discontinued selling compost in buckets and in truckload quantities.
See Material Destinations or Martins Farm for further information about the composting process.
We no longer sell compost.
