New Digital Radiography System
Thanks to a generous donation from Donna and John O'Connell, the UMass Charles River Campus Veterinary Technology Radiology Suite received a much-needed upgrade. The new Digital Radiography system has been a wonderful addition to our students’ education.
In early March, a dog with a history of vomiting was evaluated at the UMass Community Veterinary Clinic by Dr. Rubin and several veterinary technology students. Vomiting is a common presenting concern at veterinary hospitals, and abdominal radiography is a critical part of the diagnostic process to determine if medical management or surgery is needed. The students helped take these radiographs using the new system, and a foreign body was identified in the dog’s intestines. Based on that diagnosis, the pup was referred to a local hospital for emergency surgery.
During surgery, a Popsicle stick and a large chunk of mulch were removed from the dog’s small intestines. While at the local hospital for surgery, the dog was fortunate to have received continuous and loving care from one of our recent veterinary technology graduates. With the foreign bodies removed, the pup is recovering well.
Students participated in this patient’s diagnostic work-up from start to finish. The students who helped take these radiographs said “this is the best review for my practical exam.” The new Digital Radiography system is elevating students’ experiential learning on campus, and it’s saving lives!
We are grateful to the O'Connell family for supporting the education of veterinary technicians.
