Throughout Enrique’s professional career, he has dedicated his efforts to understanding the functions and significance of ion channels in cellular physiology and pathophysiology.  Enrique’s research has been driven by a commitment to uncovering the mechanisms by which ion channels influence cellular processes and how their dysregulation may contribute to disease states. To achieve these goals, he has developed research projects and protocols that allowed him to identify potential therapeutic targets. These efforts have been particularly focused on finding new avenues for the development of male contraceptives, exploring the effects of aging, and addressing conditions such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. These projects provided an excellent background in multiple biological disciplines, including molecular biology, physiology, reproductive biology, and genetics. Moreover, his academic training and research experience have been supported by different fellowships from national and international institutions. Enrique’s long-term research goals involve becoming an independent investigator and developing a comprehensive understanding of how alterations in ion transporters contribute to health and disease.
