Fall 2025 Interdisciplinary Studies Add/Drop & Withdrawal Advisory
Monday, September 8 is the add/drop deadline. Students will be able to add, drop, and swap classes until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on this date. If you drop a course before the add/drop deadline, you will receive a 100% refund of class charges and fees.
The withdrawal period is Tuesday, September 9 to Tuesday, October 28. During this period, you can withdraw from a course with a “W” on your transcript. Monday, September 15 is the deadline for a 100% refund of class charges and fees. Starting on Tuesday, September 16, if you withdraw from a course, you will receive a 50% refund of class charges and fees. After the withdrawal period ends on Tuesday, October 28 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, it will be extremely difficult to withdraw from a class and no refunds will be issued.
If you are registered for a class with “non-standard” dates, which starts and ends on dates that are different from the standard term or session, you may have an add/drop date that is different from September 8 and a withdrawal date that is different from October 28. The add/drop and withdrawal dates for such classes are located in SPIRE under “Class Notes” in each course's “Class Information.” Refunds for these classes may also differ from the standard policy.
Students can expect to spend 6 to 9 hours per course per week during the fall and spring, and more for intensive courses during the summer and winter. Most students with career and family obligations take two classes per semester (in the summer, one in each session), the minimum to be eligible for federal financial aid. Before adding another class, consider your schedule and workload, and contact your advising team for guidance. Because this is your first semester in the department, it may be useful to learn what balancing two courses with other obligations feels like before you try a higher workload.
If you add another class, or if you swap classes and that changes your number of credits (such as swapping a 3-credit class for a 4-credit class), your financial aid package and bill may be affected. To ensure you understand the changes, please consult Financial Aid before proceeding.
- Are you sure you want to drop this class? Is there anything we can do to help you stay in the class and be successful? Contact your advising team for guidance and advice if time permits.
- Be aware that you are required to carry at least 6 credits to receive financial aid. If you drop below 6 credits by the September 8 add/drop deadline, your aid for the semester will be canceled. If you have already received financial aid excess, please consult Financial Aid before proceeding.
- If you wish to drop a class by the add/drop deadline of September 8, log in to SPIRE and go to Manage Classes > Add, Drop & Edit Classes > Drop Classes.
- If you wish to withdraw from a class during the withdrawal period of September 9 to October 28, log in to SPIRE and go to Manage Classes > Add, Drop & Edit Classes > W/DR Drop (After Add/Drop).
- If you have any problems dropping or withdrawing from a class through SPIRE, contact University+ Session Records & Registration for assistance.
- Understand that by dropping all your classes, you are making the decision to discontinue your enrollment as a UMass Amherst UWW Interdisciplinary Studies student for the fall 2025 semester.
- Think this decision through carefully and consult your advisor. Is there anything we can do to help you stay and be successful? Is there a situation or life challenge you’re facing that we can support you through? Contact your advising team for guidance and advice.
- If you wish to drop all classes by the add/drop deadline of September 8, contact Academic Dean Scott Davidson for assistance with the process as soon as possible. He will complete the withdrawal form with you. If you have already received financial aid excess, please consult Financial Aid before proceeding.
- If you wish to withdraw from all classes during the withdrawal period of September 9 to October 28, contact Academic Dean Scott Davidson for assistance with the process as soon as possible. He will complete the withdrawal form with you, and will date the withdrawal to your last date of engagement with classes, as reported by your instructors.
- If you drop all classes by the September 8 add/drop deadline, and wish to move your application to a future semester (spring, summer, or fall 2026), please send an email to @email by Wednesday, October 1. In this email, please indicate whether any information has changed (such as phone or email) and whether you plan to apply for financial aid. If you have already deferred before, you will have to re-apply. (If you attended UMass Amherst in a previous semester, you can disregard this step. Please contact us when you wish to come back, and we will assist you with the re-enrollment process.)
- If you withdraw from all classes during the withdrawal period of September 9 to October 28, you do not need to re-apply. Please contact us when you wish to come back, and we will assist you with the re-enrollment process.
If you need any assistance with this process, contact the UWW Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at @email or 413-545-1378. We’re here to help and we’re committed to supporting you through graduation.
We support active duty students with degree completion, whether you start the semester while on active duty or are called to active duty during the semester.
If you have been called to active duty, or if you started the semester on active duty and need to reassess, let your academic advisor know and contact the Dean of Students immediately. Their support team will guide you through your choices, including whether to continue with flexibility in place, elect an incomplete and complete the coursework later, or withdraw from your course(s). They will also provide assistance in connecting with the Veteran's Benefits team in the Bursar's Office as needed for receiving appropriate refunds, making contact with Financial Aid Services, and completing paperwork for external agencies. Here is additional information regarding the withdrawal process.
