How to Enroll as a New Student

Welcome!  UMass Amherst offers many class and program options for students who are new to the university.  You may be interested in pursuing a certificate program, trying a class before committing to a full degree, or need to satisfy a requirement and transfer the credit to another institution.  We are here to help.   

This process applies to the following students:

  • Certificate Students: admitted or pursuing a certificate program taking your first class 

  • Guest Students:  

    • trying a class to explore a particular program offering 

    • need to fulfill a requirement and transfer the credits to another institution 

    • taking a credit course for personal or professional growth  

  • Pre-Matriculated Students: admitted to the University but would like to take classes before the official start term  

You will self-enroll in classes using our student information system, SPIRE. However, because you have never taken classes at UMass Amherst, we will need to collect some information so that we can create a student record for you first.

Below are the instructions for requesting your student record creation and next steps that are necessary for enrollment.

  1. Complete the Non-Degree Enrollment Form (for certificate, guest, and pre-matriculated students).  This form collects information about you that enables us to create your student record. Processing of this form will take a couple of business days, therefore submission of this form is due at least two (2) business days prior to the end of add/drop. See Academic Calendar for exact deadline.

  2. Once this form is processed, you will receive an initial email to the email address provided on your enrollment form.  The email will contain your UMass Amherst credentials and instructions on how to access your UMass email and Spire.  (Please note: All future communications from the university will be sent to the UMass email address ONLY, please make sure to check it regularly.)

  3. Using your UMass Amherst credentials, log into SPIRE to request a UWW Enrollment Appointment by navigating to Main Menu > Enrollment > Summer/Wtr/Non-deg Enroll Appt. This appointment represents the time period during which you will be able to enroll in UWW classes using SPIRE.   4. Once you have your enrollment appointment, you can then add classes to your cart and confirm enroll in your classes by navigating to Main Menu > Enrollment > Add Classes/Shopping Cart. For more information, please visit the Enroll in Classes Using SPIRE page.
