LEARN ABOUT PERSONAL FINANCE IN THIS NON-CREDIT WORKSHOP

Whether you are negotiating your first salary offer or planning for retirement, this workshop provides practical lessons to take control of your personal finances.  From foundational skills like setting a budget to more advanced topics such as retirement and investment planning, this workshop will get you started in making good decisions about Your Money.  

This workshop will get you started on the right foot in understanding the basics of credit scores, how best to pay off student loans, and purchasing a home.  During this workshop you will prepare personal financial statements and learn how to use and follow them, understand taxes, the time value of money, and investing.  It is never too early to start thinking about retirement, learn how to invest now for the life you want in the future. 

This workshop is being offered by the University Without Walls, Lifelong Learning Connection in partnership with the Isenberg School of Management.    

Your Expert Instructor  

Tom Mihok (LinkedIn) advises graduate and undergraduate students, clients and professionals about financial advisory, personal finance education and resume optimization.  After graduate school he started in corporate finance on Wall Street and worked in investment banking for five years.  He distributed insurance, investments and investment management services nationally for 10 years and has been a financial advisor the last 18 years.  He has taught over 70 university courses.

Tom earned an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University, an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia and a Masters in Financial Services from the American College.  He is the author of Optimize Your Resume—Proven Techniques for Competitive Situations, published in 2020.  

Workshop Format and Time Commitment

The workshop will be delivered in five distinct modules, with a mix of pre-recorded videos and materials for each participant to review on their own time.  Each module will include the option to attend live online discussion with the instructor and fellow participants, which will be recorded and made available on-demand.  Small group discussions and one to one meetings with the instructor will also be available.

Access to the workshop opens May 30, 2022 and closes on August, 5, 2022.  Participants can work through the material at their own pace or follow a bi-weekly format prescribed by the instructor.  Total time commitment is approximately 10 hours of work or 2 hours per module.     

Modules are adaptive release, meaning the next module only gets released once prior module is complete.  Full participation and completion of all activities in the workshop are required in order to receive your Certificate of Completion.

  1. Intro to Personal Finance: What is It and Why is It Important
  2. Personal Financial Statements: Where Am I Now, Where Am I Headed and How do I Improve My Chances of Getting There
  3. Taxes: The Most Boring Really Important Topic You Need to Know

Modules 4 and 5 will be adapted based on the interests of those completing the workshop, recognizing some topics are specific to stage of life.  For example recent graduates may need more guidance on paying back student loans or determining the difference between buying or leasing a car.  While other participants may want to learn about saving for their child's education and basic retirement planning.  The final modules of the workshop are designed to be flexible to meet the needs of participants.

  • UMass Amherst Alumni: $135 includes:
    • Graduate Alumni
    • Recently matriculated students
    • Those who have completed at least one credit-bearing class
