Application Instructions
Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis, with a priority deadline of June 1st. We recommend applying early as programs may fill up. Applications submitted after June 1st are subject to availability.
To apply for Summer Pre-College Programs, we require:
- A written statement of interest: a brief, one-page statement describing why you want to attend Summer Pre-College at UMass Amherst and specifically the program you have chosen.
- An unofficial high school transcript (PDF), including fall grades from the current school year. Rising sophomores should include a middle school transcript as well.
- A letter of recommendation written by a teacher or guidance counselor who can speak to your skills, abilities, maturity level and academic accomplishments that make you a suitable candidate for the program you are applying to. Letters of recommendation should be obtained by the applicant and uploaded into the online application system. If your reference prefers to submit their letter of recommendation directly, please upload a brief statement, in PDF format, indicating that your letter of recommendation is being sent directly, and instruct your reference to email the letter to: summerprograms@umass.edu.
- A non-refundable $35 application fee
International students will be asked to provide additional information regarding English language proficiency. We accept TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores. Students currently attending an English language or bilingual high school are exempt from test scores.

- A written statement of interest: a brief, one-page statement describing why you want to attend the pre-college Research Intensives program at UMass Amherst. Please include 3 lab choices along with a brief explanation of your interest in each one.
- An unofficial high school transcript (PDF), along with fall grades from the current school year. Rising sophomores should include a middle school transcript as well.
- A letter of recommendation written by a teacher or guidance counselor who can speak to your skills, abilities, maturity level and academic accomplishments that make you a suitable candidate for the program you are applying to. Letters of recommendation should be obtained by the applicant and uploaded into the online application system. The college prep workshops are open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school. High school seniors who will graduate in Spring 2023 are also welcome.
No application is required for the college prep workshops. Registrations will be taken on a first come first served basis, and will remain open until workshops have filled.
How to Register for a College Prep Workshop
- From the workshops webpage, click the Register Now button to fill out and submit a registration form.
- You will receive a follow-up email within 24-48 hours containing instructions to complete your registration.
- Follow instructions to activate your Spire account, if you don't already have one.
- Follow instructions to pay your workshop fees.
