Kelsey Whipple is an Assistant Professor in the Journalism Department and teaches courses such as Introduction to Radio and Podcasting, Advanced Podcasting, and Reporting About Gender & Sexuality. In her classes, she creates opportunities for students to build real-world skills and work toward tangible professional goals. For example, her students scripted, edited, produced and published an entire 8-episode podcast series, It Happened in Amherst, dedicated to cultural issues in Western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley. As an IIF fellow, she will present on her approaches to creating rubrics with students through an interactive activity, developing service-learning assignments, and building course objectives dependent on community partnerships outside of the classroom.
