What are the benefits of participating in the Jump In program?
Students who participate in Jump In will have an opportunity to get a head start on their academics in the 6-week summer session leading up to the fall semester. Students can earn credits towards their degree, take introductory coursework in areas of interest, and complete their First Year Seminar before they get to campus, which can provide students with a better understanding of the resources available to ease the transition to college.
Who can participate in Jump In?
Jump In is open to all incoming first year students as well as transfer students who plan to enroll at UMass Amherst in Fall 2024.
Do I need to log-in each week to attend my classes live?
Yes, you will need to log-in at the scheduled days and times of the College Success Seminar and attend this class virtually with your peers. However, your general education course will be taught in an asynchronous format, which allows for more flexibility with how and when you complete your work. Time management, organization, and personal accountability are essential skills to be successful in the asynchronous space
How will the program address students residing in varying time zones?
Gen Ed courses will be taught in an asynchronous format, which does not require students to attend class live. The College Success Seminar will be scheduled with students' locations and time zones taken into consideration.
Will the Jump In College Success Seminar replace the First Year Seminar I am advised to take in the Fall?
The Jump In seminar can replace the First Year Seminar/FFYS for some, but not all, students. If you are entering UMass in the Fall as a student in any of the following majors, you should plan to take both the Jump In seminar in the Summer and the First Year Seminar in the Fall:
-
Exploratory Track students. The Jump In seminar does not address major exploration for ET students in depth.
-
Isenberg and Engineering students.
-
Students enrolled in a RAP with a required seminar (e.g. CICS Connect RAP; Honors RAP).
For all other majors, the Jump In seminar will replace the First-Year seminar in the Fall.
Is the Jump In program fee part of my Fall tuition?
No. The Jump In program is a summer activity and therefore has a separate tuition from the regular academic year. However, the Jump In tuition charge is the minimum per credit charge the university is allowed to offer to students, whether in-state or not.
Is there financial aid available for Jump In?
Students who are eligible for the Pell Grant will be awarded a scholarship to participate in Jump In. Please email jumpin@umass.edu to learn more.
Will my credits transfer to my academic record?
Yes! All courses taken during Jump In will automatically transfer to your official academic record and fulfill university academic requirements. Grades earned during Jump In will also be counted in your permanent academic record and grade point average at UMass.
Do I have to attend the College Success Seminar?
Yes! Your seminar is part of your curriculum, and the grade you earn will be factored into your grade point average and permanent academic record. This course is designed to provide an intimate space for building connections with your peers and instructor, as well as provide you with strategies for academic and personal success in college.
Can I drop out of the Jump In program after I register?
Yes. To receive a 100% refund, students should notify Jump In staff (jumpin@umass.edu) by the add/drop deadline on Friday, July 12th.
