UWW Co-Sponsoring Showing Up with Asian and Asian American Folks

Apr 05, 2021

University Without Walls is co-sponsoring the event "Showing Up with Asian and Asian American Folks: A Community Forum and Dialogue on Building Solidarity" and invites students to attend. The event will be held Monday, April 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and is limited to members of the UMass community. Faculty, students, and staff are all welcome and should register in advance.

There has been a growing wave of incidents of racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic violence against Asians and Asian Americans. The targeted mass killing of six Asian American women and two other people in Atlanta, Georgia has horrified the world and calls us to take a stand. As our Chancellor stated, "We condemn, in the strongest terms, hate and intolerance in all its forms and stand in solidarity with Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander members of our community." Let's come together to discuss how to build a more inclusive and just campus community. Short presentations will be followed by breakout rooms to engage in conversation with each other. A partial list of speakers and panelists includes:

  • Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy
  • Linda Ziegenbein, Interim Director, Office of Student Success and Diversity, College of Natural Sciences
  • C.N. Le, faculty in Sociology and Director of Asian & Asian American Studies Certificate Program
  • Miliann Kang, faculty in Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies and HFA Director of Diversity Advancement
  • Amilcar Shabazz, faculty in Afro-American Studies
  • Leo Hwang, Assistant Dean, College of Natural Sciences
  • Joy Jarme, Executive Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs & Campus Life
