UWW Alumna Melanie Carden Wins Leadership Award
Forty-five-year-old graduate Melanie Carden of Winchester, Mass. is the winner of the 2020 UMass Amherst Senior Leadership Award. Melanie graduated from UMass Amherst in February, completing her bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Food and Culture Journalism through the UWW Degree Completion Program. She maintained a 4.0 GPA, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was one of two students in the UMass system to receive the 2019 Jack M. Wilson Presidential Scholarship.
Melanie continues her passion for food justice and her work as a writer and editor. She has recently been published in Cleaver Magazine and the Gay & Lesbian Review. She appreciates that the UWW Degree Completion Program "allow[ed] me to tailor my courses to meld my work-life experience with my current goals."
The Senior Leadership Award recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the UMass Amherst community. Award recipients have distinguished themselves through important contributions to student organizations, campus jobs, academic excellence and community service.
