Meet Scholarship Winner Joshua Mauro

Oct 14, 2022

Forty-five-year-old First Generation college student and father Joshua Mauro has been awarded a University Without Walls scholarship. The Warren, Massachusetts resident is completing his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies, with plans to continue to graduate school and become an addictions counselor.

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

MassHealth can't give me Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission waivers for credits for the UWW, so every cent counts.

What is the best part about being a UWW Interdisciplinary Studies student?

I can work around my health issues. I'm really happy with the UWW.

How do you balance work, school, and other responsibilities?

It's like trying to get my wheelchair across a tightrope.

What are your plans for the futureprofessionally and personally?

I want to become an addictions counselor, so I need a master's degree after this to get my LADC [Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor] license.
