American Popular Music


Overview of popular music in the U.S. from colonial times to the present, with a focus on the history of rock. We will examine eighteenth and nineteenth-century war songs, slave songs, spirituals, minstrel and vaudeville songs, blues and ragtime, jazz, Tin Pan Alley, swing, country-western, rock, punk, and hip hop. Requirements: readings from the textbook as well as additional assigned readings, guided listening activities in and out of class, and written critical evaluations.
