This guide lists some of the publications you may find useful in exploring careers and seeking jobs. There are many other directories which may meet your needs as well as, or even better than, those cited here. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance at the Reference and Information Desks.

This 64-page biweekly is arranged by agency, with addresses and phone numbers; it lists currently available federal jobs in grades GS5 through SES. Ask for it in the Government Documents Collection on Floor 6 of the Library.

How to Get A Federal Job Fedhelp Pub. 1989. Docs JK 716 W24 1989 This is a good step by step guide to gaining a Federal job. Sample forms with instructions are included.

A forthright explanation of how to use the bureaucracy to help you find a position with the federal government.

Note: The government requires civil service tests for most positions. For current information on job vacancies and examination schedules, inquire at the Mather Career Center or at a Federal Job Information Center (nearest to Amherst is the regional U.S. Office of Personnel Management, 450 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103; phone 203/240-3263 or in Boston at 10 Causeway Street; phone 617/565-5900).

Information about Massachusetts Civil Service openings and examinations is posted in each City or Town Hall throughout the state, and at many of the offices of the Massachusetts Division of Employment Security; in the Amherst area the nearest Massachusetts DES office is in Northampton.
