Participants from an Assessing Career Options workshop in Spring 2001 wrote the following answers when asked what they were looking for in a job or career. How many of them apply to you? Scroll down for printable worksheets to help you think more about your job.
I want a job that supports my self-esteem.
I need more money.
I want work that lets me be creative.
I need the benefits.
I want to use my mind.
I want to be respected.
I need to make changes based on my own job cycle - it's been about five years on a job for me.
I value the people I work with.
I'm dissatisfied with the work I'm doing, but I really like being at a university, the kinds of things that go on here, the students, the opportunities for education.
I like the work I do and the skills I use, but needs lots of variety.
I don't want to do the same thing all day, or for a long time period.
I'm scared that this is all I'm going to do for the rest of my working life.
What scares me most is that I'd stop learning and growing - that this is all there is.
I want to know how I can improve myself. I want to know my options.
I need to make it all work - money, benefits, family, and getting skills and education for a better job.
I like doing so many things. And I've already done most of the job people have in this room. It's hard to decide or know which career to choose.
I'm afraid of moving on to something else. How do you get moving?
I want to push paper, a different kind of paper - not toilet paper - and move from being a maintainer to doing office work.
My body is wearing out. I can't do physical labor much longer.
I need to do something that my body can handle for another fifteen years.
