About our lab:
The Laboratory of Medical Zoology (LMZ) is an academic research lab at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The focus of our research is on infectious diseases, with particular attention to those diseases with transmission cycles that involve other animal species.

One of our main research activities is testing ticks for pathogens they may carry. Individuals from across the U.S. find ticks attached to themselves, their family members, or pets, and want to learn more about potential exposure to pathogens that cause illness in humans. People can mail ticks to us or drop them off in our office, and we deliver the results of DNA and RNA pathogen testing within three business days.

About this position:
The core responsibility for this position is receiving packages mailed to or dropped off at the lab, reconciling that package with an order placed through our website at, and checking the accuracy of all information so the specimen can begin the testing process.

The lab receives as many as 400 specimens per day, and processing samples quickly and accurately is critical to the lab's national and international reputation, as well as to accurate measurement of public health risks across the United States.

Work will begin during the spring semester, and candidates can expect to spend 3-10 hours in the lab during Spring 2020 as their schedule allows. General work hours during summer 2019 are 9:00am-5:00pm. Our lab's peak season is May-July, so candidates should consider whether or not they can commit to that full period. This full-time schedule will begin immediately after final exams week. In August, employees will have the option of taking time off or terminating their appointment early.

Required qualifications:
Exceptional attention to detail, including during repetitive tasks
Good time management habits
Comfort with data entry and database work
Not afraid of ticks!

Duties and responsibilities:
Receive and open packages submitted to tick testing service
Enter data into database
Maintain an organized workspace
