Job Description: Natural Resources Assistant

Seeking a hardy Natural Resources Assistant who can work independently and collaboratively on Northampton’s bike paths and in its forested conservation areas.

The Natural Resources Assistant will identify, map, and control infestations of invasive plants in the City of Northampton conservation areas and greenways.

With the help of Planning Department Staff, the Assistant will also maintain trails in City greenways, identify and repair hazardous trail conditions, and install erosion control measures.

The Assistant will also communicate with the public regarding City owned greenways, and appropriate use of public swimming areas.

Duties primarily include:
Invasive plant species control and removal (60%)
Trail Maintenance and Erosion Control (20%)
Community Outreach (15%)
Illegal Dump Cleanup (5%)

Qualifications:
Coursework in Natural Resources, Forestry, Ecology, Conservation, or related fields
Experience working outdoors and in inclement weather.
Ability to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds.
Ability to lift forty pounds and walk on uneven surfaces.
Tolerance of mosquitoes and other insects.
Ability to work occasional half-days on Saturdays or Sundays.
Interest in and/or knowledge of local plants.

Valid driver’s license.
