Purchasing Books

Dear Students and Parents,
 
In order to provide better service and cost savings to students and their families, the UMass Amherst campus is transitioning from an on-campus bookstore to an online bookstore operated by Amazon.com.  The previous bookstore, Follett, was integrated with the UCard system and accepted the UCard debit account as one form of payment for textbooks and other course materials. Starting in summer, 2015, this is no longer the case.
 
Starting this May, Students are able to order textbooks and other course materials online from Amazon.com through personalized links in SPIRE, the university’s online student information system, or by shopping on Amazon.com directly. The UCard Office was notified that the UCard system will not be integrated with Amazon by this summer or fall.  The UCard Office is currently working with both Amazon and CBord, our campus card system vendor, to have an integrated solution in place in the future that would allow students to use their UCard debit accounts to make textbook purchases online from Amazon.
 
Until such integration is in place however, students and parents should refrain from depositing funds earmarked for textbook purchases to the UCard debit account.  Instead they will need pay for Amazon purchases via debit card, credit card, or some other form of payment currently accepted by Amazon. 
 
If you are a student and already have funds in your UCard debit account earmarked for fall book purchases and would like a refund of those funds, you will need to close out your debit account.  Please see http://www.umass.edu/ucard/content/close-debit-account for information about how to close your account.  Once your account is closed and your refund processed, you may request to have your account reopened.
 
If you do not require a refund, any funds in your UCard debit account will continue to roll over from semester to semester and year to year, as they have in the past. The UCard continues to be accepted as payment virtually everywhere on campus, as well as select off-campus venues.
