Many of us are familiar with this story about Esmeralda and the three men who vie for her love in the shadow of the great Parisian cathedral. But the French musical version of Victor Hugo’s famous novel also introduces Clopin and the Castaways, a group of homeless people and migrants, and reflects on contemporary issues: the refugee crisis, police violence, racism, and xenophobia. Together scenic and costume designer Calypso Michelet and lighting designer Sydney Becker use new technologies such as 3D modeling, 3D printing, and laser cutting to bring to life a world that bridges past and present.
Made possible by a grant from the UMass Arts Council.
