International Scholars Series - Becoming More Culturally Aware in Your Teaching Style

Event date:

Tuesday, April 23, 2019 -
9:45AM to 11:15AM

Event location:

301 Goodell, TEFD Conference Room

Session Overview

Are you concerned with making your classroom welcoming to students from a variety of cultures, but are not sure what that means in a practical sense? This interactive workshop will introduce a tool to help you analyze your teaching style. You will have time to redesign a lesson for a class you are teaching now (or one you might teach in the future) so that you can leave the session with some new teaching strategies to put into action!

Session Goals

  • Identify the role of culture and cultural differences for teaching and learning.
  • Adopt a strength-based approach to cultural differences.
  • Redesign a lesson that balances different cultural norms related to learning and draws on the cultural strengths students bring to the classroom.

Join us to build community with other international faculty, postdocs, and grad students, and to learn from and with each other. You don't have an international background but are interested in the topic? Come join us!

Co-sponsored by TEFD and the Graduate School Office of Professional Development. Pre-registration required.
