Simple changes in how we design and explain our assignments can make a big difference in student performance. A recent multi-campus teaching improvement research project shows that a fairly simple intervention – using the principles of transparency and being clear and specific when explaining the purpose, tasks and criteria for an assignment – can lead to enhanced student success, particularly for underrepresented and first generation students. So why not try it?
In this workshop, you will:
- Explore how to communicate your assignment expectations to students in ways that build confidence in their learning ability.
- Learn more about the research that illustrates how transparent syllabi fosters student success for all learners; and
- Re-design an assignment for one of your classes.
