What is RecycleMania?
UMass Amherst is competing against 400 other universities and colleges in RecycleMania 2018. A national competition that runs from February 4-March 31 that helps colleges and universities advance campus recycling and waste reduction efforts. In addition to the national competition, ResLife, Office of Waste Management (OWM), and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) are partnering to host a campus-wide competition between residence halls.
How do I participate?
Get it to the bin. Recycle your recyclables and compost your food waste & compostable containers. Make sure that you review the signs that indicate what items are accepted. Remember compostables go in the trash (not the recycling) where compost bins are not available. Check out the campus recycling guidelines here!
FREE COFFEE MONDAYS
In collaboration with UMass Dining, Bring your reusable mug and mention RecycleMania at any UMass Retail Dining Outlet on Mondays throughout the competition for a free regular coffee.
How will this help us in RecycleMania?
Reusable mugs reduce the overall amount of waste created by single-use disposable coffee cups. Although the coffee cups on our campus are compostable, many of them end up in the wrong places (trash and recycling bins) and contaminate the waste streams. Too much contamination in a load of recyclables may result in the load getting rejected and sent to the landfill. Using reususable mugs also reduces the energy and materials used for manufacturing and transporting single-use containers.
How long does RecycleMania last?
RecycleMania is an 8-week competition that begins February 4 and ends on March 31.
When are results announced?
Track current rankings for the national competition on the leader board at www.recyclemania.org. General information regarding the campus competition is available at www.umass.edu/sustainability/recyclemania. Information and current standings for the Residence Hall competition will be circulated through our social medial channels and available at www.umass.edu/living/learning/sustainably.
Who's winning the UMass Residential Competition and how is UMass doing compared to some of our peers?
The final results of the national competition will be announced on April 16th, 2018.
Are there prizes?
Each week, five randomly selected residents of the winning residence hall will receive solar chargers. And if UMass Amherst wins a category in the national competition, the University will be featured on the RecycleMania website and receive a national press release. UMass will also receive an awesome award made out of recyclable materials and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for next year.
