Campus Solar Projects

Main Campus Solar Projects

The university now has solar installations at eleven different locations across the main Amherst campus.  In 2023 these solar projects combined at a capacity of about 10,000 kilowatts (kW-DC) generated over 10 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable electricity which flows into the campus electrical grid and used to power buildings and support campus operations.  There are five parking canopy systems and six roof mounted systems.

To access generation data we have a UMass Campus Aggregate Dashboard that includes most of our parking canopies and rooftop systems.  The only projects that aren't shown on this dashboard are the Lot 34 parking canopy system and Crotty Hall/Gordon Hall rooftop system.  These have their own dashboards (below).

Other Solar Projects at UMass Amherst

In addition to the solar projects mentioned above, UMass Amherst also has a ground mounted solar array that is raised high enough off the ground to allow for animal grazing and farming located at the Crop and Animal Research and Education Center in South Deerfield, MA.  More information about this project here.

UMass Amherst also has a solar hot water system at the Central Heating Plant.  More information about this project here.

UMass Amherst also uses solar powered bus stop departure signs as well as solar powered charging stations.
