Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking

This two-week immersion into documentary studies offers students a hands-on introduction to video production as one way to address concerns about the world. Students will learn documentary history and imagine future directions as they research, shoot, and edit collaborative projects. The course will cover camera technique, interviewing strategies, recording and mixing sound, and non-linear editing. Daily screenings of innovative documentary works and visits from several local makers will provide students with a diverse array of strategies and distribution models. The course is designed for students with a range of experience with video, including none at all. Curiosity, teamwork, and a desire to creatively explore social justice issues are the foundations for student success.
