program overview

International Hospitality Academy (IHA) is a 2-week summer program offered by the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), University of Massachusetts Amherst. As one of the oldest and most reputable hospitality programs in the U.S., the IHA offers students a valuable experiential learning opportunity integrating seminars, practical training courses and visits to hotels, tourism and cultural attractions in Boston, New York and many other destinations.

IHA participants benefit from:

Marriott Center for Hospitality & Tourism Management, located at UMass Amherst's Campus Center, is IHA's primary learning environment. Alongside seminars, the Center is equipped with a contemporary training restaurant, training kitchen and a food and beverage laboratory. These will offer students an ideal experiential learning environment, and students will have the opportunity to participate in food labs and wine studies & tastings.

Both formal course arrangements and extra-curricular activities will provide participants with ample opportunities to practice an enhance their command of English.

This 2-week program provides students and recent graduates a unique opportunity to study hospitality topics such as wine and beverage management, strategic lodging operations, leadership, service etiquette and manner, legal cases, festival and event management, and business communication, as well as tour the vibrant and thriving hospitality and tourism industry of New England and New York.o

IHA provides fundamental academic concepts in the classroom, but enforces that education beyond the University setting. Broaden your global perspective during extra-curricular trips to Boston and New York City. Experience first hand the U.S. hospitality industry including hotels, music festival sites, sport stadiums, convention centers, casinos, and various tourist destinations.o

Application instructions

We invite applications from international students who are interested in studying in the US. IHA is designed for students and recent graduates prepared to learn and immerse themselves into American hospitality culture in New England. IHA is taught in English and can accommodates CEFR B1 and more advanced English speakers.

The IHA application and registration is managed by UMass Summer Programs.

Honors Residential Hall

EducationUSA Academy students will stay in a modern, fully air-conditioned residence hall in the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community, located close to classrooms, the library, and the Recreation Center. You'll join hundreds of other high school students from the U.S. and around the world attending pre-college programs. To help you get to know other students, you'll be paired with an American student in a double-occupancy room. Each floor is single-sex. Our experienced live-in staff will organize fun co-curricular activities and act as mentors to students.

Your meal plan consists of 3 meals a day in the UMass Amherst dining commons, ranked #1 in the U.S. for campus food. A wide variety of healthy, delicious options is available (including vegetarian and vegan options). It’s not unusual at one meal to have a choice between sushi, pho noodles, create-your own stir-fry, pizza, a pasta bar, or the deli station.
