
Prepare for Financial Emergencies
We recommend building up an emergency fund throughout your time at UMass. The recommendation is to save 3-6 months worth of expenses in case of an emergency, such as a malfunctioning computer, a broken-down car, unexpected medical expenses, or a family crisis. In addition to an emergency fund, be aware of support systems available to students experiencing financial difficulties and emergencies:

Student Care & Emergency Response Fund (SCERF) |
Covers expenses such as food and housing, medical and basic health needs, childcare, being an international student (such as visas and travel to get back home), caring for a disabled or sick parent, technology, and more |
